A Beacon of Hope in Mukono, Uganda

Uganda, a nation that gained independence from Britain in 1962, has faced numerous challenges in its journey towards economic and infrastructural development. The country’s struggles are compounded by the devastating impacts of HIV/AIDS and pervasive corruption. With more than 50% of its population below the age of 15, many of these children are orphans. In this context of widespread poverty and suffering, the plight of girls and women is particularly severe.

The Birth of a Vision

In the heart of this turmoil, one remarkable woman has stood as a beacon of hope. Sr. Mathias Mulumba, a member of the Good Samaritan Sisters (GSS), recognized the urgent need to support vulnerable young girls in Uganda. In 2000, she founded the St. Maria Goretti Girls Vocational Training Centre in Takajjunge village, Mukono, with the mission to transform the lives of underprivileged girls—mostly orphans, school dropouts, and destitute teenagers from families ravaged by HIV/AIDS.
